„Our World – Our Magazine“
connections / theory / visual practice
Sometimes – at university and in life – you just need to use all you have – to communicate what you want to show with your art, why and how you did it.
So, the question is: How does your world look right now & what makes you YOU?
The magazine is a fusion of theory and practice. The students each got two pages to show how their lives look right now in times of COVID-19 and what’s important to them: One for the visualization and one to explain their visual in words – with their own words and with the help of those from one chosen theorist we talked about in class.
… A project to encourage exchange between students: about different (visual) cultures, images/games, about representations and the role of language. We talked about the challenges of finding their places in the world, creating their visual art and how to communicate with it. So.., what could it mean: “YOU DO YOU!”
We discussed together about our cultures & with Stuart Hall, Jack Halberstam, Donna Haraway, Edward Said, Michel Foucault: About the role of language and images & games, the challenges of representation, and thinking within a community and cultures our questions of individuality as an artist at the same time.
Communication about the Magazine
„You are the artist of your own life. Don’t hand the paintbrush to anyone else. Because you must be the change you wish to see in the world. Here are 26 artists that created their own artwork – emotional and touching. Revealing their sometimes chaotic, sweet, melancholic, positive perception of the world.“
„Everyone is an artist, nothing is impossible in the world, just do it seriously.
When I see the work of my classmates, I feel some darkness or sadness in their work. (I feel the same way when designing magazines) But there are other people whose work is really colorful and fun. Even though the process was tough, it was really great working as a team. I really appreciate this class. Very happy to meet all of you!“
FEEDBACK / EVALUATION (student’s quotes)
– I learned that university is way better than school >_> Back in school I used to get bullied by the professors themselves (not even by the students). So I really re-learned to like learning environments again.
– I got to know an amazing professor and I hope I have more lectures with you in the future.
– I learned about other ppl’s perspective about the world – which is something I always like to do.
“You know when you know about things, but you don’t know if you can learn more about it? This is how the theory lectures from this class felt like. Felt like the satisfaction of putting hearts instead of dots on top of it”
“I learned about some theories about communication. I learned adobe inDesign. I learned that having a group project with a whole class can be quite difficult but fun. And i learned I like inperson class A LOT more than online class“
„I learnt: everything will work out somehow even if you think it won’t“
„I learned how to design a cirle magazine. I’ve only designed squared ones.”
„Group work experience; Thinking about project description, and how important it is to the project; Communication; Not to take everything seriously; Trust the team”
>i am terrible at visualizations
>i know how to better explain ‚culture‘ to someone else
>what the pros and cons of trying to do the same thing in a large group”
„I learned about perception of information and that there is no objective truth.”
“Be more positive. Communicate more. Try to give more feedback. But one thing I know for sure: the fight between circles and squares is not over yet”
„I learned how to create a project with new group members“
- never discuss about a circle or square magazine
2. how to work as a team on a bigger project ( not as easy as it sounds like )
3. learned about different world views from other students
4. try to be more active and not afraid to discuss stuff“
“The question is: is it perfect to you? Because I really think you deserve the best”
